Make a Chimp Smile

April 1, 2001

This morning before work I read in TCPalm's little printed news about this little boy who really got me inspired. Brandon loves and wants to see a wonderful future for chimps. orangutans and other apes so they can climb trees, lay out in sun and just monkey around. The article isn't too long, so I'm going to provide it here as well linking to the article on the TCPalm page (just click on the article title below to be brought to the page).

Youngster embarks on campaign for Save the Chimps Sanctuaryby Deanna Wood (YourNews contributor)

"Make a Chimps Smile! Save the Chimps!" This is the name of 9-year-old Brandon Wood's informational and fundraising blog.

Brandon, who lives in Kissimmee and has relatives in Jensen Beach and Sewall's Point, is trying to raise awareness to The Great Ape Protection Act (GAPA), H.R. 1326, as well as fundraising for "The Great Chimpanzee Migration" that would bring rescued chimpanzees to Save the Chimps.

Save the Chimps, in Ft. Pierce, is the world's most sophisticated chimpanzee sanctuary. Here chimps that have been rescued from labs can live out the rest of their lives running on one of the 12 islands.

The goal is to raise $25,000 to bring 10 chimps to Save the Chimps Sanctuary. These chimpanzees were rescued from the Coulston Foundation in New Mexico.

It is very simple for people to donate online by visiting http://makeachimpsmile.blogspot.com/ and click on the first-giving tab.

At this time the Arcus Foundation will be matching donations to Save the Chimps Sanctuary between now and April 30.

It is Brandon's dream that one day there will no longer be medical testing done on the great apes and that chimpanzees and orangutans will no longer be bought and sold for the purpose of entertainment or pets.

He is inviting elementary and middle school students who would like to submit written pieces and or drawings to the blog to help raise awareness for the GAPA as well as fundraise for http://www.savethechimp.org/

Contact Brandon at Binkswood@gmail.com if interested in joining his cause.

Brandon knows that he can't change what has happened to the chimps but he can try and help them now. so he would like to invite everyone to make this dream possible and "Make a Chimp Smile" (original story March 18, 2010)

I've just been to the page and they've almost reached their $1,000 goal, so if you can help that would be great! And if for whatever reason you don't decide to donate, at least go and take a look at the page, educate yourself on what he trying to do, what these apes and chimps are going through, just be aware and pass it along to the next person.
